Artist Statement
On a broad scale, my work representational in nature, surveys the human figure and objects derived from it. Materials such as clay and fabric have proven to be both adaptive and responsive to issues that I explore, such as touch, affection, ownership, abandonment and adoption.
A closer look at my work discloses how clay is used in conjunction with or in opposition to fabric, to push these themes to different depths. The transient quality of clay, from malleable to inflexible and vulnerable, to stone-like and irreversible, plays on issues associated with the ephemeral nature of childhood, child vs. doll, corporal vs. mental transformation. Fabric is either used to embrace the clay or surrender and become part of it. Its softness, transparency, texture and the transitory quality are all analogous with the human skin while contrasting with the permanency of the fired clay. My work attempts to discern what is everlasting and worthwhile and what is not.
